Henna Night: Traditions and a Planning Checklist

3 min read ·

The henna night (xınayaxdı) is the bride's last big celebration in her family home — her friends, the women of her family and close relatives come together. It's both joyful and emotional; planned well, the bride can enjoy it calmly before the wedding rush.

What is a henna night

By custom, it's held at the bride's family home a day or two before the wedding. The henna often arrives from the groom's family on a decorated tray with candles and is applied to the bride's fingers and palm. Henna is seen as a symbol of wishes for happiness and abundance; in some families the bride's friends have henna applied to their hands too.

When to hold it

Holding it the night before the wedding is traditional, but it can be exhausting in practice: the bride goes to bed late and has to be up early for makeup and hair. Holding the henna night two or three days before the wedding is also a perfectly acceptable choice. Decide based on what's most comfortable for the bride.

At home or in a hall

Traditionally it's held at the bride's family home. If there are many guests, a small hall or restaurant is more comfortable. At home, plan the space, food and music in advance; in a hall, set aside a quiet corner for applying the henna.

Preparation checklist

  • Henna: choose a product made for skin; if an allergy is possible, test it on a small area a few days beforehand.
  • The henna tray: candles, decorations and a bowl for the henna.
  • The bride's outfit: some families choose red or another bright color for this night. Henna can stain fabric — be careful with light-colored clothes.
  • Music: live performers, a DJ or the family's own musicians.
  • Food: sweets, fruit and tea; hot dishes depending on the format.
  • Photos: a photographer, or a friend in charge of capturing the moment the henna is applied.

Inviting guests to the henna night

Usually only some of the wedding guests are invited to the henna night, so a separate invitation makes sense. The wording can be warmer than the wedding invitation — you'll find ready-made examples in our wedding invitation wording article.

No. It's the family's decision: some hold a big celebration, some a small evening for close people only, and some don't hold one at all.

Henna is mainly applied to the hands and doesn't affect the dress directly. Just let it dry completely so it doesn't transfer onto clothing or fabric.
